2026 Pre-Conference Workshops

Pre-Conference A:
Expansive Authenticity: Reimagining Leadership Presence for LGBTQ+ Higher Education Leaders.
Presenter: Dr. Brian Arao, Brave Space Leadership

Traditional definitions of “executive presence” often rely on narrow, Eurocentric, and heteronormative standards that can feel restrictive or misaligned for LGBTQ+ leaders. Too often, we are told that to lead effectively, we must either conform to these rigid molds or choose “unfiltered” authenticity. Both of these binary choices fail to account for the actual impact of our actions on those we lead. This workshop introduces a new paradigm: Expansive Authenticity.

Coined by Dr. Brian Arao, Expansive Authenticity moves away from the idea that “there is only one way to be me.” Instead, it asks: What are all the ways I can be authentically myself, and which of these best align with my leadership goals? By understanding authenticity as more complex and nuanced than acting in an unfiltered manner, leaders can focus on
leadership results—connecting with and impacting others—without sacrificing their core identity.

In this highly interactive three-hour session, participants will move through a sequence designed for deep reflection and immediate application:
> Deconstructing Presence: We will examine how traditional “executive presence” excludes LGBTQ+ experiences and introduce a result-oriented definition of leadership presence rooted in connection.
> The Expansive Framework: Participants will explore the tools of Cultural Intelligence (CQ) and Impression Management. We will navigate the complexities of managing how others perceive us, learning to take what works for our goals and leave behind what does not.
> Identity as a Superpower: Through a guided exercise, leaders will gain clarity on how their unique LGBTQ+ identity serves as a foundational leadership strength rather than a barrier.
> Professional Group Coaching: The session will culminate in a group coaching experience focused on overcoming specific barriers to authentic practice, allowing participants to act as co-learners and builders of shared wisdom.

Each attendee will receive a session workbook to facilitate direct application of their learning, including a summative activity to outline a personal vision for their own expansively authentic leadership. ($75)

Pre-Conference B:
Voices for Equality: Moving Hearts & Changing Minds Through Storytelling
Presenter: Nia Clark, Human Rights Campaign
NiaClark.com

Personal storytelling has always been a critical tool in our fight for LGBTQ+ equality, whether talking to family members, classmates, co-workers, or elected officials. Now more than ever, we need to refocus on the basics of telling our stories in ways that bridge misunderstanding and help to shift the narrative about who we are. This workshop does just that.

Voices for Equality empowers LGBTQ+ advocates and allies to change hearts and minds through the power of personal storytelling. This workshop connects lived experiences to a broader movement for equality—building empathy, shifting public opinion about LGBTQ+ identities and experiences, and strengthening community leadership.

Participants will:
>Learn impactful storytelling tools to effectively communicate their lived experiences.
>Build confidence in sharing powerful, authentic stories that resonate.
>Develop and align shared narratives to shift public perception and foster understanding.
>Strengthen collective action in support of the LGBTQ Leaders and Human Rights Campaign’s mission for LGBTQ+equality.

This training welcomes LGBTQ+ advocates, allies, and community members—whether experienced or new to HRC—who are passionate about equality and engaging in their communities.
Participants will reflect diverse identities and levels of storytelling experience. Each training includes local leaders from the community who will assist with small group work and help create a welcoming, supportive environment.

Through interactive exercises and guided reflection, participants will leave with a compelling personal narrative and the skills to use it as a tool for advocacy and change. The training emphasizes authenticity, emotional safety, and resilience—encouraging stories rooted in reflection, not fresh pain. ($75)
